What does .ai stand for?
Technically, .ai is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It was created in the 1990s, like other two-letter country endings such as .se, .de and .io.
Because the letters "AI" are also the universal abbreviation for artificial intelligence, the ending was adopted by the tech world. Today most people who see a .ai address think of AI, not Anguilla, and income from .ai registrations has become an important source of revenue for the island.
Why .ai is popular with AI companies
The rise of generative AI turned .ai from a niche ending into one of the most sought-after domain extensions in the world. Founders choose it for a few reasons:
- It describes the product. A .ai address tells visitors what kind of company you are before they read anything else.
- Short names are still possible. Nearly every useful one-word .com is taken. On .ai, strong short names are still available, either for registration or on the aftermarket.
- Industry credibility. Many well-known AI tools and research companies use .ai, so the ending feels familiar and trustworthy to customers and investors.
- Brand consistency. Some companies own both the .com and the .ai, and use the .ai for their AI product line.
Who can register a .ai domain?
Anyone. There are no residency requirements: you do not need to live in, or have a company in, Anguilla. Individuals and companies from any country can register a .ai name through an accredited registrar.
Registration terms and minimum periods are set by the registry and can change over time. Historically, .ai required a minimum registration of two years, so check the current terms with your registrar before you buy.
How much does a .ai domain cost?
There are two very different price levels:
| Type | What it is | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| New registration | A name nobody owns yet, registered directly through a registrar. | Standard registry fee, usually higher per year than a .com. |
| Premium / aftermarket | A name already owned by someone, bought from the current owner. | From a few hundred dollars to six figures or more, depending on length and demand. |
Most short, meaningful .ai names were registered long ago, which is why the aftermarket exists. When you buy a premium domain, you pay the purchase price once and then the normal renewal fee each year.
Is .ai good for SEO?
Yes. Country-code domains are usually treated as targeting one country. However, Google treats a small group of ccTLDs, including .ai, as generic domains because they are used worldwide. That means a .ai site can rank in any country, just like a .com.
The domain ending itself is not a ranking factor that gives you a boost. What matters is content, links and user experience. Still, a relevant .ai name can help indirectly:
- Higher click-through rate in search results, because the name looks relevant.
- More branded searches and direct visits, because the name is easy to remember.
- More natural links, because people link to brands they recognize.
.ai vs .com: which should you choose?
| .ai | .com | |
|---|---|---|
| Signals AI | Yes, instantly | No |
| Short names available | Some, mostly aftermarket | Very rare |
| Global SEO | Yes (treated as generic) | Yes |
| Familiarity with non-tech users | Growing | Highest |
| Yearly cost | Higher | Lower |
If your product is built around AI and you sell to a tech-savvy audience, a strong .ai name is often a better brand than a long or hyphenated .com. Many companies own both and redirect one to the other.
How to choose a good .ai domain name
- Keep it short. One or two words. Every extra letter makes it harder to remember.
- Pass the radio test. If you say it out loud, people should be able to type it without asking how it is spelled.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers unless they are part of your brand.
- Hint at your use case. Words like legal, voice, data or code help visitors understand you at a glance.
- Check trademarks. Do not build a brand on a name that contains someone else's trademark.
- Check social handles. Matching usernames make your brand easier to find.
